4. Arena for communication

Unlike a physical community site that may be rather non-communicative place or building, in which the "communication" must be "added" purposefully, the computer-mediated community is communication itself. What is previously said about “site”, works still as an introduction and backgrounds for this section. A web site, or in many cases a network of web sites (the most popular fansites of Habbo Hotel in a country or a language region), works particularly as a platform for communications. What happens there, is mostly of communication. Political negotiations, debates and other manipulations dealing with the particular social world happen on the arena. Organisations present their ideas there, subworlds intersect partially there, statements claiming authenticity occur there, members’ socialisation is maintained there.

Examples from Habbo and Geocaching

Habbo arenas: HabboForum, Nerokala's forum, Elitefisz.

Geocaching: Discussion forums for the Nordic and Baltic Countries.

Social design strategy

Since the communication is the reason for existence of online communities, there must be many folded interaction possibilities in your community. This is usually well-established part of existent communities.

However, for this very reason your particular community might be more interesting if there would be also a possibility to do, to construct, to destroy something together.

Allow lurkers' existence. An arena for communication also needs lurkers. In many cases they can be seen as an audience motivating more active contributors.
